Introduction to iBEACON

What is iBeacon?

Beacons are transmitters that tell iPhones, nearby, of their presence. They use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology.

iBeacon and Marketing
This technology lets brands, located indoors, transmit data to audiences’ mobiles.  Data could include promotions, coupons, or information to help them with their shopping, and so on. It, also, accept payments. There is similar technology available to marketers, e.g GPS signals and NFC. The advantages of iBeacon over GPS signals: better at indoor mapping and pin-pointing locations. And advantages over NFC: range and price. Therefore, iBeacon really does open up the possibilities to marketers. However, there are concerns. Firstly, privacy : over companies collecting mobile users’ data. Secondly, spamming: a potential channel for spamming mobile users.
